Don't Let God's Begotten Be Forgotten

A mother was excited to have several of her dear friends offer to come over and celebrate the recent arrival of her newborn son. She welcomed the friends on the appointed day as they gathered at her house, bringing with them food and drink, and then together they celebrated the happy event in her life.

After a while, one of her friends said, “Bring the baby out so we can see him.” Immediately, the mother arose to go to the bedroom and get the baby from his crib. When she got there, she started to panic with a rush of fear. Then she remembered that the baby was still at her parents’ house where she had left the baby that very morning. She and her guests were having so much fun that she had forgotten momentarily where she had left the baby and, perhaps, what the party was all about in the first place.

It seems to me it is possible during the Christmas Season to be so caught up in the celebration that we forget the birth of Jesus is the reason for the season.

I would remind you, from this past Sunday’s sermon, The Difficulty of the Journey, that the Wise Men, who traveled a difficult trip of over 300 miles to reach Bethlehem, never forgot the reason they had come. When the star led them to the house in Bethlehem, “They were overjoyed” (Luke 2:10) and “They bowed down to worship him” (Luke 2:11).

May we, too, have that same single-minded focus as we celebrate Christmas… Make Jesus the focus of your Christmas!

Devotedly yours,
Pastor Ron
