I want to remind you that Voting Day is Tuesday, November 5. So prepare by deciding on how and when you will vote (unless you have already early voted). As you know, we have voter guides at the church that outline the candidates’ positions on the major issues, especially related to moral concerns. We have, as well, a list of amendments for which you should be familiar.
I would urge you to practice good citizenship as a loyal American, devoted to a free Republic, by participating in the democratic process. Secondly, practice your faith as a devoted follower of Jesus by voting according to your moral and spiritual values. Allow scripture and biblical principles to inform your voting decisions. I cannot emphasize strongly enough how important this is for the future of our nation and the welfare of our community. I think this is, in principle, a part of what Jesus meant when he said, “You are the salt of the earth...” (Matthew 5:13). Our nation has never needed our Christian influence more than it does now. So cast your vote with your faith & freedom in mind. I agree with the late, great Billy Graham who said, “I believe it is vitally important that we cast our ballots for candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles...” (His Last Public Statement Issued October 11, 2012).
We are now in November, so we are in the fall of the year. Nevertheless, the temperature in recent weeks has been rising because we are in a sizzling hot politically charged season in which we are bombarded through the media with partisan advertising, critical commentary, spirited debates, inflammatory rhetoric and
personal attacks. I told you a couple of months ago that we were entering the “crazy” season and I was not wrong. I think we all look forward to this ending. However, I would remind you that we will be left with lasting results and indelible consequences, depending on how we vote. So vote prayerfully and prudently. As your pastor, I urge and encourage you to support candidates who endorse our beliefs and vote for amendments that best represent our Christian values.
Let me give you an example. The U.S. Supreme Court has thrown back into the States the decision on abortion. So it is on the ballot this Tuesday. I have seen numerous political commercials in favor of this amendment ad nauseam, and you have too—but I have yet to hear one syllable of truth in these ads. This concerns me. Know this: the Bible plainly and indisputably teaches a baby in the womb is a precious life in God’s sight and worthy of protection (Psalm 139:13-16). Any voter or political leader who excuses or endorses the destruction of this human life has placed himself in a position of opposition to God’s Word. The Bible warns about taking that which is evil and calling it good and that which is good and calling it evil. I do not want to one day stand before my God in the judgment and be wrong on this life and death issue. For that reason, I will Vote No on Amendment 4. Further, I trust you will do the same!
