Let’s think about small words. It occurs to me that small words can be powerful, even life changing. That is true for better or worse! The words are said, “I do” and a couple is committed for life. The word “guilty” is spoken and a person is sentenced by a judge to a life in prison. The word “yes” is given to Jesus in a prayer and that person’s destiny is determined for all eternity. So small words can be powerful in their effect.
God seems to love small words…For example, the woman at the well in John 4 left her water jar at the well and then went to tell the people in the town of Sychar about Jesus. She used small words. She said, “Come see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” (John 4: 28-29). After hearing these simple words, the town followed her back to the well to meet Jesus. It was here that Jesus had His greatest harvest of souls. These small words were life changing for so many.
It does not take impressive apologetics and persuasive speech to bring people to Jesus. It takes sincere words, simple words, and small words from a sincere life devoted to Jesus for us to impact positively the lives of others with the gospel. That is usually how it is done and how people are won. Just like the woman in this great passage of scripture. So never underestimate the value of small words of witness to those around us. It may be those words which turn their hearts to Jesus.
I wonder what well-placed, small words you could use this week with someone which could make a big difference in his or her life. Remember: small words can be powerful, even life changing!
Devotedly yours,
Pastor Ron
