“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (John 1:14).
I like the way the Apostle John introduces Jesus in his gospel. John tells us that Jesus came to rub shoulders with people like us. In so doing, He showed us that He loves us. Think about this…
Jesus was born to a young and poor peasant couple, in a smelly barn, occupied by livestock. He was announced by angels to simple shepherds, on a hillside near a rural village, one evening while they were watching over their sheep. This extraordinary event, the birth of the Christ child, came to an ordinary setting and plain folks—like you and me.
We can learn a lesson from God’s choice of a stable for the place where His Son would be born. It is this: you never know where God will make an appearance in your life. It is in the places and times we least expect Him that He comes. You may be in such a place now. It may be a difficult place where you are loaded down with heavy burdens. Perhaps, on the other hand, it’s a place where you are overwhelmed with routines, deadlines and responsibilities. It may seem to you that God is far away, but don’t be so sure. God has a way of showing up in places we would not have anticipated. Indeed, He comes to ordinary people, like shepherds, peasant couples, and like you and me to show us His affection and remind us of His attention. It is here, with people like you and me, that we realize God is near!
It is just like Jesus to do this! Christmas reminds us that He loves us! May this be an unforgettable truth of your Christmas!
Devotedly yours,
Pastor Ron
