“The Bible is a harbor where I can drop my anchor, feeling certain that it will hold.” (C.H. Spurgeon)
The Word of God for a Christian means this: You can believe it and build your life on it. Also, you can understand it and stand by it. “The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple” (Psalm 119:7). The word “trustworthy” in the Hebrew is a participle of the verb from which we get the word “Amen.” It means here that even the simplest can understand it and believe. They can say, “That’s right!” They can claim the promises of God’s Word.
You may be thinking “Yeah, but there are parts of the Bible that I don’t understand.” True, indeed. It’s been said: The Word of God is plain enough to instruct a child, yet deep enough to confound the learned. But, rest assured, the word of the Lord that you need at any given moment in your life can be understood by the illumination of the Holy Spirit in your mind and heart if you will receive it. If you do, then you will be blessed by it. In reality, and ultimately, the challenge is not to comprehend it, but to be obedient to it.
Thomas Brooks wrote, “The Word of the Lord is a light to guide you, a counselor to advise you, a comforter to console you, a staff to support you, a sword to defend you, and a physician to cure you.” (Paraphrase)
I want to encourage you again today, as I did this past Sunday, to study God’s word faithfully and meditate on it daily. Remember the promise of scripture:
“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8).
Enjoy God’s word today!
Devotedly yours,
Pastor Ron
