The 1958 World Series matched the Yankees and the Braves. Hank Aaron stepped up to the plate and focused for the first pitch. However, hoping to distract him, Yogi Berra, the Yankee catcher, said, “Hank, your bat is turned the wrong way—you can’t read the brand.” Aaron’s reply was short and to the point, “I didn’t come up here to read!” Hank Aaron knew what he was there to do.
It is good to know what you are here to do. I like to remind us as a Church Family what we are here to do. We’re on a mission from God. Christ placed us here to share the gospel with our world. Jesus has given us a job to do!
Christ came into the world to reach a lost world. Jesus said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10). That is what Jesus came to do. Today, that is still true—only through you! Jesus has given us all a job to do. Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you, And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). We call it the Great Commission. The Great Commission is found five times in the New Testament, including all four gospels, and in the book of Acts where Jesus said, “You will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8).
The repetition of the commission is the Holy Spirit’s way of getting our attention. This is God’s way of saying, “Now hear this! I’ve got a job for you to do!” So it gets down to this: the work of every Christian is to share with every unsaved person. Sharing the Good News of Jesus is the first business of FBC Pompano to our community and then to the whole world.
That is why Missions Day, that we experienced this past Sunday, is so important to our church. We need this reminder so that we remember why we pray, give and go! I enjoyed every moment of it! Further, I am grateful to pastor a church that gets it! May God continue to grace us with His power to witness at home to our friends and neighbors, and to support missions actively abroad!
One personal note: I am so thankful for the ministry of our Missions Pastor, Don Worden, and for his faithful leadership over the years. He is a treasure to us all!
Have a great day!
Devotedly yours,
Pastor Ron
