The prophet Zechariah tells us: Do not despise the day of small things (Zechariah 4:10). Here is why: The small things you do can make a big difference.
In the latter days of World War II, an American B-17 bomber flew a mission over Germany. The plane was riddled by shells and flak, with some of the hits directly in the fuel tank. Amazingly, the plane did not explode and was somehow able to fly home. After the plane landed, the airplane repair crew removed eleven unexploded twenty-millimeter shells from the fuel tank. The shells were dismantled, and to the surprise of everyone, all were empty of explosives. Inside one of the shells was a note written in Czech that said, “This is all we can do for you now.” This meant that a member of the Czech underground, working in a German munitions factory, had omitted the explosives in at least eleven of the twenty-millimeter shells on his assembly line.
The worker may have thought he was making an insignificant contribution to subvert the Nazi war effort as compared to those on the front lines, but he was making a huge difference in saving the lives of the American crew in that B-17 bomber (and likely many others like them).
We may not realize it at the time, but the small things we do for the Kingdom of God and in the lives of those around us may be hugely important in the end. Think about the small things of scripture like Moses’ rod, David’s sling, Gideon’s pitchers and torches, and a small boy’s loaves and fishes. Indeed, small things can make a big difference! So do not underestimate the days in your life filled with normal and seemingly insignificant things. You just never know the difference you are making….
Think about it!
Devotedly yours,
