We have giants we need to face and battles we need to fight. In recent weeks, I have been writing about our spiritual battle from Ephesians 6:10-18. Today I want us to think about How to get the edge in spiritual warfare.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests” (Ephesians 6:18). This means to pray in harmony with His will while seeking to live constantly in His will. The Bible speaks often of hindered prayers when our lives do not reflect a serious walk with the Lord (1 Peter 3:7). The Bible speaks of unanswered prayers when our lives reflect a sinful walk before the Lord. For example, “When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of (wickedness); wash and make yourselves clean” (Isaiah 1:15).
Have you ever had the feeling that your prayers were not going past the ceiling? As a result, you think prayer doesn’t work. But listen— unanswered prayer is not God’s fault, nor is it the fault of prayer. I think the fault lies elsewhere. It could be your prayers are not answered because you are not living consistently or it could be that you are not praying correctly. You could be praying selfishly. The book of James says, “When you ask God, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (James 4:2-3). James is saying, Don’t pray selfishly!
If you are going to succeed in spiritual warfare, you must learn how to do prayer. That means you must commit to praying correctly while living consistently. That is what it means to pray in the Spirit and all this we do by God’s grace.
How often should we pray? Here Paul says, “Pray…on all occasions” (v.18b). Later he says, “Always keep on praying…” (v.18d). Add to that what Jesus said, “(We) should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1). So every concern of life should be dealt with in prayer—from common praying to crisis praying. We should always be praying—without giving up. This is how you get the edge in spiritual warfare! Pray about it—you have a battle to fight!
