All Things Are Possible

In recent weeks, it has been my privilege to share with you a short summer series called GIANTS.  We have looked at some of the great stories of faith in the Old Testament. This past Sunday we looked at the real life hero Gideon who faced a challenging situation. In it, Gideon discovered God’s strength. Before he fought his enemy, he had to fight his feelings of inadequacy. He had to overcome fear and doubts. Once he did, he discovered a strength he had never known before.

The more difficult your circumstances, the deeper your faith needs to be. The greater your obstacles, the bigger your faith needs to be. When you find yourself in a situation where you need God’s help, then you must learn to put your faith into action. This is when you fully realize, “All things are possible to him who believes” (Mark 9:23). It is then we understand that faith and prayer go hand in hand. Our faith pushes us to cry out to the Heavenly Father who is the One who can give us the help we need.

There was once a young man named Joseph Scriven. He fell deeply in love with a beautiful girl. All he could think of was her. But the day before their wedding, the girl drowned in a boating accident. Joseph was overwhelmed with emotional despair and bitterness. For several months, he questioned God regarding this. He doubted the wisdom and purposes of God.

After a lengthy season of agony and grief, Joseph finally came to realize that he had no one to turn to but God to find comfort and regain his peace. So this he did.

Sometime later, Joseph sat down and wrote these words—

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear,                                      
What a privilege to carry,                                                
Everything to God in prayer.    
                                                 
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,                                                  
Oh, what needless pain we bear,                                              
All because we do not carry,                                              
Everything to God in prayer.

No matter what Giant you may face, remember that God is your help. Turn first to Him! Find comfort and strength in Him! Then fight your Giants!
