Today I am writing about the subject of guilt…Do you ever feel guilty? Personally, I hate that feeling! How about you? I suppose we all live with a bit of guilt, real or imagined, and like anxiety, we have to come up with a plan of what to do about it.
The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit convicts us of guilt (John 16:8-11). But the guilt God gives us is an expression of His grace to us. He will not sit back and allow us to continue in sin until we destroy ourselves. God’s guilt is designed to draw us back to Himself and to bring us to a healthy life. It’s true; God is trying to help you. God said, “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
According to scriptures, when you feel guilty (because you are guilty), you must be willing to confess it. In the Old Testament, after David sinned, he admitted his sin and it was only then that he felt forgiveness for his sin. In Psalm 51, we find the record of David’s painful experience of confessing it. But Psalm 32 was written sometime after David had experienced and internalized the forgiveness of God. Relief and release from guilt are found all through it. Here is a sample—
“Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the (one) whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit…I confessed my sin to you and did not cover my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD’ – and you forgave the guilt of my sin” (Psalm 32:1-2, 5).
The thing is—God is watching everything and everyone—including you! This is not to make you feel guilty but because he loves you. His desire is to remove your guilt and to help you to be good. His joy is to bless you and fulfill you. That is something you will discover for yourself if you will come to Him with your guilt. That is a good reason to do so!
So, unless you enjoy feeling guilt, come to Him and find forgiveness, along with release from your guilt (1 John 1:8-9). You can thank me later!
