A Heart at Peace

Today the focus of this writing is on peace. I am sure you would agree that it is an important subject. The Bible says, “A heart at peace gives life to the body…” (Proverbs 14:30). Therefore, we have every reason in the world to desire peace. The good news is that God desires that for us and His Word promises that to us.

This involves at least three kinds of peace: First, there is Spiritual Peace. The apostle Paul writes about it: “Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Before you can know the peace of God, you must know peace with God. This we find by placing our faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord.

Secondly, there is Emotional Peace. Scripture says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” (Colossians 3:15). The word “rule” means “to umpire.” An umpire keeps the game going in a smooth, orderly fashion. The peace of God keeps everything running smoothly within you when everything is going roughly around you. We look to Christ daily and trust in Him to bring serenity and stability.

Thirdly, there is Relational Peace. Paul stated, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18). This relational peace reduces conflict. God gives us the help we need to do this. That does not suggest the absence of problems; it does indicate the presence of power. It is not the elimination of stress in relationships; it is the addition of strength to assist in these relationships. God helps us to live at peace (as much as is possible) with those around us.

Keep in mind the premise of this promise is this: The fruit of the Spirit (including peace) is a gift of God’s grace. We trust in Jesus to produce peace in us—and peace is what He promises. Jesus said, “Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

Here is what this means: God peace is a gift that must be received deliberately and lived out daily. It is different from the world’s kind of peace in that it is not dependent on circumstances. Therefore, our focus should not be on our problems but on our God who holds the solution to our problems. We look to Him!

Make no mistake about it: God is the One who gives peace. It’s been said: Look around and be distressed; Look within and be depressed; Look above and be at rest.

Remember these life-changing words: “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3). So always—Keep your Focus on the Lord!

Devotedly yours,
Pastor Ron
